What is workplace discrimination?

Workplace discrimination is where people are treated less favourably than people of the opposite sex on the basis of their sex, race, their marital status and their family responsibilities.  Discrimination can be direct or indirect.  Legislation to ensure that there is equality in the workplace includes the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 (Commonwealth), the Australian HumanRights Commission Act, 1986, the Age Discrimination Act 2004, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1984.  Further information about these can be found on the Australian Human Rights Commission web site.
