For and about women

Some web sites target women specifically - the best of these is the Victorian organisation WIRE - women's information which was set up by the Women's Electoral Lobby, Lifeline, The Victorian Police and the YWCA. They have a lot of volunteers, and provide phone support, training, education and a good web site. I really like their photographs of women - they all look so sassy!

The other States also have women's information services - you can see the links to them on the WIRE web site. Even though this page looks as if it hasn't been recently updated, all the links but one on this page worked.

The following web site also has an interest in women's stories:  Australia Donna.  This web site, which is offered in Italian and English, tells the stories of Italian women in Australia as well as providing networking opportunities between women of Italian origin who live in different Australian States.

Statistics about women

A brief overview of current gender equality statistics is produced by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and published on their web site.

If you want a bit more detail than the overview, the publication Women in Australia 2009, produced by the Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), might be helpful. This publication provides a useful summary of information on women's economic outcomes, education and training, health, housing and leadership.

The most credible source of statistics on gender can be found on the Australian Bureau of Statistics web pages on gender statistics.  This information is particularly useful if you are doing research, but perhaps for people who are just curious about where we stand, it is a little less useful unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

FaHCSIA also provide an interesting list of women's milestones.
