One more push for paid maternity leave

Posted by Jenni Colwill on 18 November 2008 | 2 Comments

At NFAW, we are becoming more worried that the momentum for paid maternity leave is being lost as the government sets its priorities in the next budget. We need you to help us get the message across.

If you've been reading my blog, you'll know that there have been reports from the Treasurer, Wayne Swan, and the Finance Minister, Lindsay Tanner, saying that paid maternity leave - which they thought was a really good idea - probably won't be introduced in the next budget due to the global financial crisis.

Needless to say, the dinosaur world is very pleased to hear this. But we're not. Are you?

Read our letter to Cabinet Ministers, and then send an email to Wayne Swan or Jenny Macklin telling them that you want them to immediately implement the national paid parental leave scheme proposed by the Productivity Commission's draft report.

  • I wonder why it is only maternity leave that concerns you, and not parental leave ?

In some cases, for example where the woman is the higher wage earner, a couple may decide that the father will stay home and take care of the kids.

This family is prevented from having a more secure financial position if men do not also have the option of receiving parental leave.

  • I want the paid parental leave scheme implemented immediately. The dinosaur world need to realise that they now live in a different century, I am a full time working mother and my hubby also works full time, paid parental leave is a must for Australia, it is the children of today that help the finances of Australia tomorrow. without progression we have nothing.
Australia was not in a position to give paid parental leave one or two centuries ago but we are now, so why not do it. do not use the global financial crisis an an excuse, I am in the field of employment and there has been little change in the employment market, thus far. what you will get though is a population crisis in the future, then you will really know what a financial crisis is then because there won't be enough adults in the next generation of workers to keep paying people on the dole, aged pensions and disability pensions. why should I work my butt off for my taxes to pay for a bludger, I'd much rather it go to a mother on paid parental leave knowing she will return to the work force rather than someone who has been recieving benefits for decades because they "can't find the work" well look harder.
