First for Australia

Australia must be growing up! As far as I can ascertain, Anna Bligh's win as Premier of Queensland hasn't inspired one sexist comment in the media! In fact, most of the media reports are taking pride in her achievement as the first woman to be elected Premier of an Australian State by the general public. Me too!

Needless to say, lots of Australian women are deeply satisfied by the outcome. Anna Bligh has worked hard for this position, and her hard work is now being rewarded. She took a risk with the early election, but it has paid off.

But even more significant is that she has returned her government to office for its fifth successive term.

This doesn't happen very often - the last time it happened in Queensland was in 1944. Yes that's right - Nineteen FORTY FOUR!

One of the best newspaper articles on this event was the Age editorial today. This article comments on the remarkable fact that Anna Bligh has achieved her election result during a period of recession, in a State that depends on resources. Often this is a time when the more conservative parties will win.

Go Anna!
