Comments on the background paper for a new national human rights action plan for Australia
In 1993, Australia suggested to the World Conference on Human Rights that national human rights action plans should be adopted. This was adopted and a recommendation was accepted. In 1994 Australia developed the world's first National Human Rights Action Plan, which was last updated in 2004.
In 2010, the Australian government released Australia's Human Rights Framework. Further to this, a new National Human Rights Action Plan is being developed as a way of engaging people in the issue of human rights. The Action Plan is intended to provide a public commitment to human rights in Australia as well as to provide an example to other countries of how to achieve higher standards of human rights.
2020women has provided comments on the approach and process proposed in the background paper, in order to emphasise the fact that we see women's rights as a human rights issue.

Submission to the Advisory Group on the Reform of Australian Government Administration
Headed by the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mr Terry Moran AO, this Advisory Group has been given the task of delivering a plan to reform Australian Government Administration by early 2010. Individuals and organisations were invited to make submissions to comment on any matters they believe are relevant to the work of the Advisory Group. The 2020women response focuses on building a public service that takes better account of women's needs.
Submission to the Department of Health on a National Women's Health Policy for Australia
In 2007 the Australian Government made an election commitment to develop a National Women's Health Policy. The Policy will recognise gender as a basic determinant of health, which gives rise to different health outcomes and different needs for women and men.
In line with international developments and the Government's social inclusion agenda, the National Women's Health Policy will emphasise prevention, health inequalities in our society, and the social determinants of those health inequalities.
As part of the consultation process, 2020women made a submission supporting the submissions prepared by WomenSpeak and the Australian Women's Health Network.
Submission to the Australian NGO Beijing +15 Review
In 1995 the Fourth World Conference on Women was held by the United Nations in Beijing. Attended by 39,000 women from 150 countries, the Beijing Conference developed the Beijing Platform for Action, an agreement that identified the actions to be taken by governments, the UN and by women's groups, to make women's human rights a reality. Every five years, this document is reviewed by the UN, and governments, including the Australian government, seek the views of its citizens on progress against the Platform for Action to feed into a country analysis.
The 2020women submission provides comment on each of the actions agreed under the Beijing Platform for Action.
